I'm in first year university and would qualify for OSAP but I failed the credit check due to circumstances beyond my control (illness causing job loss). It has made me ineligible for every type of aid - not only will they not give me a loan but I can't get any grants either, including bursary for first generation students from my university. The process to appeal is hard and the bar is very high. I can't get grants, bursaries, work-study or any of the "free tuition" promised. I'll graduate with just as much debt as everyone else posting here. In addition to forgiving past years of student debt or interest, the government needs to make the OSAP program more accessible to people who have faced financial hardship by separating loans from grants and allowing partial awards and providing assistance with appeals. Some help would be better than nothing.
